For my eighth graders, I set a number of finished pieces = required per quarter (3, in this case). One of those three is assigned- we are also = required to do particular genres- the other are personal choice. This has seemed to work well so far. Of course, I have to keep on them, too, and = the status of the class helps me see who's drafting volumes and finishing nothing, and who's switching pieces every day so that there's been no continuous writing getting accomplished. Or at least, the answer goes with a question asked on 6 = Traits. Cheryl Sigmon answered and gave me permission to re-post her reply. = Susan ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~= ~ ~~~~~~ >>As I am beginning to plan for next year, I have a question about mini-lessons during the writing block. At the beginning, do you provide mini lessons on the same topic for a whole week (each day providing a = little less support)? Or do you move on to a new lesson each day? >> Each day you'll model writing (something you want to "tell" your students = is the way you'll want to phrase it to them). You'll write about very = ordinary things---something your baby did last night, a funny stunt your dog did, a = favorite game you played when you were 7years old, etc.--so that your kids = will feel that they, too, have something they could "tell" on paper. When = you do your short modeling, you'll include 2 things daily: 1) a quick = edit, using just basics--things you'll add to your Editor's Checklist; and 2) a mini-lesson about the writing process, writing terms, grammar, usage, mechanics, class procedures, etc. You can change to a new topic each day, = although surely you'll want to show kids how to extend their writing on = many occasions. Also, you can change to a new mini-lesson each and every day. = It's whatever you think will help your kids to grow in their writing. Hope this helps! ---Cheryl ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: 6Traits- Another cute listing questioning the English Language!! You could have blank formats of = this brochure available during presentations for listeners to use as note = taking formsThe group presentation model is great exerience in expertgroups which = all people in the workforce will need at one time or another.
