Martin" Date: Tue, 05 Oct 1999 20:54:58 -0700 Today I bought a book, "Night of the Gargoyles" by Eve Bunting. It was in paperback, published in 1994. The language in it was so descriptive I had to share. It starts: The gargoyles squat high on corners staring into space, their empty eyes unblinking 'til night comes. Then there is movement in the shadowy corners as the gargoyles creep on stubs of feet along the high ledges and peer, nearsighted into rooms where mummies lie in boxes, long and thin as coffins. ribboned round with painted boats and figures dark as night. And gargoyle-creep again to gape at suits of armor shining, stiff, the helmets hinged on eyes as bloodless as their own. Or, tired of viewing, fly, if they hve gargoyle wings, straight up to lick the stars with long, stone tongues green-pickled at the edges. Or land in sleeping trees to swing on branches, da-de-da, and feel the air move cool against their pockmarked stone. The poem goes on to describe their romps in a fountain, scaring the night watchman, and back to resume their stony stance until night comes again. Drawings are in black and white--a wonderful addition to my library! (Especially at Halloween time of year!) Thought I mmight print the whole thing out for them and have them find words to substitute, working in pairs or groups up to four. ??? Barbara, you come up with the greatest books. I'll have to look = for it right away. What great word choices! Thanks for sharing this book. My older son collects gargoyles and even at 31, I think he'd enjoy this book, so I guess I'll need two copies. =3D) I love the idea of having the students substitute words, too. What a = great way to increase student vocabularies, play with word choices, and teach synonyms. Love those lessons which teach more than one thing! =3D) I'm putting together pages which show some of the books we found this summer as examples of each of the traits. It's slow work, because many of us didn't put the authors with the titles, or we left out grade levels. I'm checking in with people who sent examples during the course, and I'll let you know as each page goes up. There are still lots of people on the pen pal page. The two 1/2 multi-age classes are gone, and so is Mrs. Kooger's class. I just haven't had time to take them off yet. But all the others are there, including some 7th grade classes. >The gargoyles squat >high on corners >staring into space, >their empty eyes unblinking > >'til night comes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: 6Traits- Re: 6Traits - new book From: Date: Wed, 6 Oct 1999 00:20:31 EDT Hello, I wanted to say hello to this group. I am an elementary teacher in = Colorado and we have only used six traits for little over one year. I love it. = What ideas do you have for using rubrics with primary kids? I saw the Gargoyle book and love it as well. If you are looking for more Gargoyle books, there is a beautiful one by Dav Pilkey called, God Bless = the Gargoyles. Jack Prelutsky's new poetry book has something to do with Gargoyles. Look forward to all the great ideas from this group.
