In 5th and 6th grades in the early 60's, I was in a program for gifted kids in Cleveland, Ohio called Major Work. One of the big components was called the Morning Talk. We had one every day, and everyone was required to give, as I recall 3 per semster. Some could = be brief - 3-5 minutes, but at least one per year had to be 15-20 minutes - very long, believe me! We had to choose the date, the topic, which had to be approved, research it with at least 3 sources, using only 1 encyclopedia, we had to have visual aids ,such as charts, artifacts, etc, and we had to speak from cards that contained correct outline form. What your idea reminded me was that after the talk, we were graded by the rest of the class, and their critiques were in a form similar to yours. We had = a chart on the wall listing the components of good public speaking, and whoever was the chairman of the day went through the chart, and people suggested how many of the available points you had earned, and they had to justify their opinion. In addition, your cards were turned over to 4-5 kids, who checked your outline form for accuracy. It was a point of honor to use fewer cards - we all looked up to the girl who could talk for 20 minutes from 4 cards! I look back and I'm amazed, but we all did it, and believe me, research papers were a snap after that! Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Any Major Work alumni out there? It's a piece about shopping on the internet. Request: I won't get to see the show because it's pre-empted here, and in our whole time zone, by a championship ball game. If anyone on the east coast would be willing to tape the news program for me, I'd be happy to = pay for the tape and postage to get it to me. After 2 hours of taping, I'd be interested to see what the actual 3 = minutes or less looks like! =3D) Let me know if you are willing. Thanks. Watch if you want to know what I look like! =3D) Susan ---------------------------------------------------------------------- End of 6Traits Digest -- To unsubscribe, send any message at all to: 6Traits-off@.
