I've been working on word choice in my workshop-style classroom. I'm =
beginning
to see some results! I tie my writing in with my reading workshop. For =
several
weeks I've been asking my students to find various types of words as part =
of
their reading journal vocab work. We started with finding words the =
author used
instead of said, moved to looking for exciting description words, and have =
also
looked for vivid verbs. In our group novel study, I've picked vocab words =
that
are used in unusual ways, or in particularly vivid ways. I'm beginning to =
see
this work reflected in my students writing. One student wrote "I was
preoccupied with my work and didn't hear mom." I commented on her use of
preoccupied and she said, "It sounded better than busy."

Thanks for posting your story! It's so great when we begin to see =
results!
It seems as though I should be blue in the face from all the talking I've
done about word choice in the last month! Today one of my students said,
"Mrs. Nixon, the story said the dog bounded up the stairs. That's much
better than saying it walked." Yes, yes, yes!!!! =3D) Someone is =
hearing me!

Has anyone else heard of the book...Donavan's Word Jar ? I can't =3D
remember the author, but it's about a little boy who collects words that =
=3D
he sees around him and puts them into a big glass jar. Naturally the =3D
jar becomes full and he can't decide what to do with the words...I won't =
=3D
tell the ending...you really need to check it out! I read it to my 1 -2 =
=3D
combo class and had kids coming back to my room the next year asking if =
=3D
they could borrow the book so their teacher could read it to the kids =3D
who hadn't heard about it yet! It's definitely worth trying to locate =3D
it for your classroom.
