I've been reading Harris and Me by Gary Paulsen aloud to my kids (8th
graders). His word choice is wonderful. The kids are starting to comment =
as
I'm reading to them. They have also noticed work choice in The Giver- one =
of
the premises of the community is precision of language.

Diane,

Thanks for those ideas! I like _The Giver_ myself. Isn't it exciting =
when
they start to catch on to some of these things?

I don't think they can really understand how to use the traits until they
can identify them in others' writing. That's really the job of K-2
teachers, to lay a nice solid foundation. The first few years, it has to
be difficult until students begin to come along who have the background.
That's when I expect to see things take off!

Has anyone used _Donovan's Word Jar_? It's in the February Trumpet and I
heard something about it, but didn't pay any attention. The description
makes it sound as though it would be great for word choice, though. If =
you
know anything about it, let us know.

Did I share, and if I didn't, would you be interested in having me share,
seven ways to begin an expository piece? It was probably designed for
older students, but it worked *extremely* well with my 2nd graders - given
the fact of slightly lower expectations, of course. =3D)

I shared it with someone, but I don't think it was the 6Traits list.

Susan,
Thanks for sharing your ideas on expository writing. We are now in the
midst of the 6-traits assessments.
Thanks ahead of time.
