It was the Dolce list. I'll look it up. When the = kids used these, I gave them a 12"x18" piece of colored construction paper to place words on. How timely! You may find actual word lists, as well. I haven't explored the entire site. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>= >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Subject: Dolch flash cards on the internet From: "Susan Nixon" <susan@desertskyone.com> Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2000 20:38:01 -0700 If you would like your students to have practice on the basic sight words, but you and your school don't have the big bucks for fancy software, try this site: http://www.lsg.net/~web-frog/robrider/robriderflashcardcover2.html You can choose levels 1-11 at Rob Rider's site. Cards flash on one at a time. If the student does not know the word, he/she can click on "Say the Word" and the computer will say it. This works on my PC which isn't anything special (2 years old) and doesn't have fancy software. It's worth a try for practice for your students. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: teaching the three branches of government From: Date: Thu, 20 Jan 2000 11:13:53 EST Hi, I used to hate teaching the 3 branches, but over the years it has = gotten easier. I go from the "constitution" starting point. * We read Sh We're Writing the Constitution by Jean Fritz. there is = some organization which will give each student his own copy of the Constitution = in a booklet form; we get them every year unsolicited. The kids can then = check out the answers to their questions from the original source. They feel "cool" * Betty Debnam writes the "Mini Page" a supplement to the sunday = comics. She has a wonderfully illustrated and accurate book of reproduceables for = teachers on the parts of the government/constitution. It covers the branches, jobs, members of each branch etc. (The Mini Page, P>O> = Box419242, Kansas City.MO 64141) Now, this address comes from an old issue I have = from l993. Possibly you might find a web site or a more current address from WashingtonPost.com *Now if you are integrating material with language arts, I read them = the story of the Big Bad Wolf and the three pigs (the story from the wolf's = point of view). We have a trial, set up like a real one, with lawyers, jury, = etc. We study point of view, debate, and write persuasive letters at this = time. * We memorize the Preamble. It's invigorating and impressive for them * We design a stamp and write a persuasive letter supporting the = cabinet position which we would like to hold in the Executive branch. We do the = same for amendments of our choice. * some years we tackle the question of a class constitution by = studying the real one and drawing up our own. The class meetings we hold weekly = are run by the president, each block of several desks is a state. I tend to avoid elections for the whole grade level which become a popularity = contest often. We draw persuasive posters, raise issues of importance, pass bills = throughout the year. I have a tendency to get off track (too right brained), so just get = ahold of the Debnam book and go for it. She's great. IT'S A SNOW DAY!!! Ann ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: substitute preparation From: Date: Thu, 20 Jan 2000 12:02:53 EST Happy Thursday, tonight is ER...Tomorrow is Friday. Can life get sweeter? Here's an uncontroversial subject on which I need assistance. I have a neighbor who is just getting ready to start substituting. She has been = going back to school, is the mother of 3 youngsters and needs clues on how to = best prepare herself for being a substitute teacher in elementary school. Questions: 1. What do you value most in a sub? What do kids like most (does = this matter?) 2. Do any of you have experience in subbing who would share any = useful tips with me? 3. What kinds of things should be in my friend's grab bag of tricks regardless of where she will sub? Worksheets?, useful books for her to = buy at the teachers' store?, tried and true disciplinary methods or incentives = which work. I think she'll do fine if she has some resources before she starts. Thanks for your input. Ann ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: 2nd grade writing samples From: "Susan Nixon" Date: Thu, 20 Jan 2000 12:12:23 -0700 Here are two samples of writing from our latest project. We were practicing sentence fluency and good starts. Feel free to check them on the K-2 rubric. =3D) Do you no what bug me? My brothers and sister. they are mean to me Because they don't like me. Because they hate me. They bug me to play my baseball game. And They bug me to play my Racing game. They bug me for all my games. They lack me in me room at night. They wrap me in my cover and put Me in my closet This is from one of my really sweet boys, who isn't that great academically. I'm pleased. =3D) This is one from a higher functioning student: It drives me nuts when girls mess with me (when) I'm playing on the monkey bars. They laugh at me (when) I fall (when) I am hanging on them. They bug me because they take my shoes off. They push me. They call me names like dork dumb boy and fraidy cat. They bug me a lot. I get mad (when) they bug me but I don't do anything. Girls are annoying except Mrs. Nixon. I hate the girls. They bug me a lot. The girls are brats there annoying. I had told him to check his spelling for when. Through mis-communication, he thought he was supposed to delete all the whens! These are the times I *do* like this job! =3D) Susan Nixon Phoenix, AZ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: 6Traits- Expository writing From: Date: Thu, 20 Jan 2000 23:49:26 EST I would love to have it.
