What do you value most in a sub? What do kids like most (does >this >matter?) Someone who follows directions! I hate leaving plans that took time to prepare and coming back to find that none of it was done. I also like someone who keeps the class in order. The students like someone who is in control. It is very annoying to those who want to learn to have those who don't constantly keeping the class in an uproar. > > 2. Do any of you have experience in subbing who would share any >useful >tips with me? Subs need to have their own fall back activities. Sometimes the teachers leave inadequate plans, or occasionally no plans at all. Subs should be prepared for that event. Frank Schaffer has some wonderful book-related folders which can be used for an entire day's plans. You'll need the book for the folder also. Practice & LearnRight has a Substitute book of ideas, too. > > 3. What kinds of things should be in my friend's grab bag of tricks >regardless of where she will sub? Look for ideas which can be used anywhere. books - see above. Most students respond to the possibility of a reward. Stickers, movie time (for those schools with VCRs available, I would have a Magic School Bus or other video in my bag), even candy, though I use that sparingly. 5 minutes at the end of a period to talk with friends is good with older students. An activity that is fun to do and promotes learning also, such as a cooperative learning activity, is a good incentive, too.
