To do long division get a wad of money, no more than 5 of each bill or coin needed.Only in your world you = only have dollars, dimes, and pennies (decimal notation) Take five children up = to the board and say they can "have" the money if they can share it equally. = Show them that with $1.23 divided equally between five children you have = to share the dollar first. Tear one up into five pieces. They'll die!! Suggest another way (make change so that you have "useable" money-dimes. Continue sharing dimes until you find you have two = left which you can't share with 5 people. They will hate that! Change = into pennies. Share evenly until you have only three pennies left. That's = yours. Only after a round or two begin silently recording your actions using the = algorithm on the board You can encourage children to bring in spare change. Then convert it = into Dollars and cents which must be divided. And disperse it daily. Of = course you can do this with fake money (same denominations) which will buy = something at the class store, or you can just play who wants to be a "Penny-aire" and see who earns the most in a day. Money is a great motivator. It teaches children to ":see" = what a "fair" division or sharing really means. Have funl Ann, Maryland = 5th ---------------------------------------------------------------------- End of 6Traits Digest -- To unsubscribe, send any message at all to: 6Traits-off@.
