From: "Susan Nixon" Date: Wed, 01 Mar 2000 07:25:15 -0700 We also go by state standards for our curriculum. Our district gave a copy of the standards to every teacher. It also tells each grade level where their main responsibilities lie. The state chose the 6 Traits as its writing assessment, also, and mandated "research based" phonics. We're still sorting out exactly what that means! =3D) We have peer teachers, who do not have their own classrooms, and one of their jobs is to help the classroom teachers at all levels, K-8, design and implement curriculum activities which will implement the standards. They also offer inservice activities which further the standards instruction. If you would like, I will see if I can get a copy of our standards booklet and send it to you. There must be a spare copy somewhere in the district! =3D) Your own state department of education might be the best place to start, so that you have the educational goals first and can design a program that will meet the goals. I just learned that I have been chosen! I'm so excited, I don't know when I'll come down from the ceiling! Don't think this means I won't still be sending all the wonderful ideas I find to the 6Traits and Edlist. That kind of thing will be part of the job I'm accepting, along with inservice, mentoring new teachers, and developing thematic units.
