If the bright ones leave, what does that say about the REST of us?

According to a new analysis of federal survey data, about one out of five
teachers leaves the profession within three years of entering the =
classroom.
And the quitters are more likely to have entered college with higher test
scores than those who keep teaching. This nationwide pattern in teacher
turnover suggests that "the best and brightest" abandon the classroom much =

faster.

Among teachers who graduated from college in 1993, those who had left the
field by 1997 were about twice as likely to have scored among the top 25
percent nationally on the Scholastic Assessment Test or in the American
College Testing program than those who were still teaching.

Dissatisfaction with working conditions, student misbehavior and =
relatively
low salaries were the most common reasons that teachers bailed out.

What can (and perhaps should) be done to convince the "best and brightest" =

teachers to STAY in our chosen profession?

How many of us love the concept of Evaluation? =3D)

Still, it's important to look at what we've done and how it's worked. I'd
like to invite people to share experiences as they've used 6Traits this
year. For many, it's been a new experience, something we don't feel
entirely comfortable doing, perhaps. Yet, even poorly presented, I think
6Traits can provide a lot of structure to beginning writers, and a good
framework to support those struggling to be good writers, at any age.

If you have an experience, a thought, a suggestion, or a particularly
successful lesson to share with us, please do so. I'd love to hear what
you tried, what worked, what didn't, what your students responded to, what
they fought against.

I think I'll write a poem, my favorite form of evaluation. =3D)
