The original author is a 4th grade teacher. Everything on yesterday's
checklist has been covered in my 2nd grade class. With parental help, or
done in class with the teacher, I see no reason why 2nd and 3rd graders
couldn't use it, or a modified version. Alone, I doubt that they would do
well. I will be using it with my second graders, but with intense teacher
help and some parental help.

I would think that even junior high or perhaps high school students might
find a lot of help in the packet.

Step 2 - Choosing An Appropriate Topic and Gathering Information

Before you go any further, you need to select your topic. You will need
to choose a topic that will have lots of information from lots of
sources. It cannot be too big or broad (Animals or All About Me) or too
narrow (How Many Eyes Fish Have or What My Middle Name Is). Choose
something in between (Angelfish or Human Skin). On the lines below, list
some possible topics. Also list questions you have about your topics..
That will help you as you begin your research.

Remember that you will need at least 3 sources for information. It
cannot all come from the same book Make a list of places where you might
find information on your topic. Follow the example. If you are unable to
think of questions, or cannot find enough information, choose another
topic and start over. When you narrow your choices to just one topic,
circle it and show this page to me.

EXAMPLE:

Topic: Barracudas

My Questions
1. What does a barracuda look like?
2. What do barracudas eat?
3. Where do barracudas live and why?
4. What are some interesting or unusual facts about the barracuda?

References
1. Book : Interesting Facts About Barracudas
2. Encyclopedia Article: Barracudas
3. Internet Article: Animals at the Aquarium

Possible Topic 1: Possible Topic 2:

Questions Questions
		1. 1.
		2. 2.
		3. 3.
		4. 4.

References References

		1. 1.
		2. 2.
		3. 3.

Next, ask me to approve your topic, questions, and reference sources. If
I initial on the lines here: _____________, it means you may move on to
the next part of your report.
