Six = >Traits seems like a good way to teach and assess the Writing Block. Absolutely! It fits like a glove. I use both in my second grade class. Have you been to our website? There are some great resources there! http://6Traits.Cyberspaces.net > > >My questions to the group are, >What books should I be reading about Six Traits? Read everything on our website. Go to the archives and read messages from last year's online class. http://6Traits.Cyberspaces.net/archive/?_NO_DATETIME Link to the other sites shown at the top of the page for even more information. One of the sites is the NWREL, originators of the 6 Traits. Linking to their site, you will find two books on 6 traits. _Seeing With New Eyes_ would be the one with the most information for implementing 6 Traits. > >Does anyone on the ring teach second language learners? Are you willing >to >share your success or trouble? Arizona is requiring the 6+1 traits (the +1 is presentation - how the paper looks) as the writing assessment throughout the state in all grade levels. All of our ESL and bilingual teachers used it for the first time this year. For a writing assessment, the language doesn't change, I don't believe. Whatever language a child is using, criteria such as voice and sentence fluency would be the same. The one that might change slightly is the one we at which are all experts anyway - conventions. > >Is any familiar with Four blocks? Am I biting off more than I can chew >when >I try to integrate the two programs? Not at all. I use both in my classroom with no difficulty. I incorporate the trait-identifying lessons into my guided reading and read aloud times. I incorporate it into the writing mini-lessons during writers workshop. Again, fits perfectly. I know there are others on the listserv who do the same. > > Susan Nixon Phoenix, AZ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re(2): 6Traits- Six Traits+ Four Blocks From: "Susan Nixon" Date: Fri, 05 May 2000 08:04:51 -0700 >I teach 3rd grade, and I am trying to integrate 3 programs. Six Traits, >4-Blocks and Accelerated Reader. I didn't get it all together this year, >but I think things will be better next year. Time is the biggest >roadblock. Agreed! I have one computer in my room, so the students do most of their AR testing during the self-selected reading time. I have had one girl who has been able to get into the program for several months and has helped others get in and find their test. This has been a *huge* help! Now I have about 4 who can do it on their own and help others. We also have computers in the library where they may take tests, and in the computer lab, which usually falls on a day off school or half day for us! I have AR books in the SSR boxes, and posted a list of which Berenstain Bears books and Little Critter books are on the test list we have available. I have also done teacher made tests for stories from our literature book. The stories are complete, minus a few pictures, so students are allowed to test on those after Wednesday. This has been a big help with the students who are not the best readers. A few of the stories are already in the AR program, but I had no qualms about adding others. If they didn't want us to do that, they wouldn't have put the option in the program. =3D) I have a site up with some teacher-made tests. I will try to remember to post the site from home. I don't have it here at school. Strange, eh? > > Susan Nixon Phoenix, AZ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re(2): 6Traits- Six Traits+ Four Blocks From: "Susan Nixon" Date: Fri, 05 May 2000 08:04:51 -0700 >I teach 3rd grade, and I am trying to integrate 3 programs.
