An enjoyable way to check direction writing paragraphs, shared by Cindy
Sandahl:

Do you do any circus things? One writing activity we do over a few days
starts out with each child drawing the best clown (it could be anything
else, too) they can, and keeping it private as they draw. We talk about =
how
clowns look, what they might carry, etc. The next day, or whenever, each
child writes a descriptive paragraph of their clown. I encourage telling
everything they can. Later again, (next day for me) I hand out the
paragraphs randomly to the students... I have numbered them to know whose =
is
who. Now each child has to draw a clown following the description =
written.
When done, they try to match their clown to the original. Then we talk
about how close the drawings are as a whole class. This takes some time,
but it is fun to see what they come up with.

Susan,

At our school students start taking tests at the third grade. The first =
and
second grade teachers decided that it was so much of a hassle trying to =
take
A.R. tests with children who were just beginning to read they opted out of
the program. Third graders still have some difficulty at the beginning of
the year, but they catch on quickly.

Recently I was accused of censorship because the children could only take
tests and get points over Accelerated Reader books. The grandparent that
was really upset because I wouldn't let her granddaughter take a test over =
a
book that was more than one grade below her level. (She was something =
like
3.4 at her bottom level and wanted to take a 2.0 test.) I never did
resolve the problem because the lady was so hot over the issue that she
wouldn't listen. I guess I have not explained the program well enough.
