>At our school students start taking tests at the third grade.

We start in first grade. Teachers didn't have an option. Our first
graders this year are
reading! My second graders have improved reading so much. It's because
they read a lot more. Practice is what does it. =3D)

The whole school was tested in the fall, in January, and this week again,
using the star test, to determine how much they gained this year. After 3
years, my students averaged 1/2 year's gain. I'll be interested to see
how the end of the year test is.

The AR tests aren't in-depth comprehension, but they do get students
thinking about details, and without that, they aren't going to have
in-dept comprehension.

This is the standard rule. Our students must stay within that level. The
computer won't let them test very far outside their level. There's
nothing you can do if the parent won't listen, but it shouldn't all come
down on you. AR is a school program, and here the principal and the
librarian set the rules. If a parent has a serious problem, that's where
it should be addressed.

I started the year skeptical about the program, but am very much in favor
of it now.

We talked about this book earlier this year. I just noticed that it is in
the Trumpet Primary order for April. This order is still good. It is
item #47 and costs $3.95. The phone number is 1-800-826-0110. It is 50
bonus points, if you want to order it that way.

At our school we have an Accelerated Reader Committee comprised of whoever
want to be involved that sets the criteria of our schoolwide program
(barring any conflict with admin & there NEVER has been any).
